Ayrton Senna crowns himself in Suzuka: At the XIV Fuji Television Japanese Grand Prix on October 30, 1988 (round 15 of the World Championship), Senna started only 14th in his McLaren MP4/4 after an engine shutdown, fought his way to fourth place by lap 4, was second by lap 20, and took the lead on lap 28 – all the way to the finish. With the victory, he secured his first world championship title and his 8th win of the season, surpassing the record for wins in a season (previously held by Jim Clark in 1963 and Alain Prost in 1984). Alain Prost finished second despite gearbox problems. Thierry Boutsen completed the podium.
