Österreichring, August 13, 1978: At the XVI Austrian Grand Prix (race 12 of the World Championship) in nearby Zeltweg , Ronnie Peterson mastered chaotic rain conditions. After an early crash by Andretti on lap 1, several spins, and a red flag, Peterson led at the restart ahead of Depailler, Lauda, and Laffite. As the track dried out, tire squabbles shook up the field: Reutemann took over on lap 19 on wet tires, and Villeneuve led shortly thereafter (from lap 23) – but after they switched to slicks, Peterson reclaimed the lead and won. With the victory, Peterson moved within nine World Championship points of teammate Andretti – but was contractually barred from challenging for the title.
Our art print is a homage to Ronnie Peterson ’s last triumph – and to his legendary car: the Lotus 79 .
