Le Mans, June 12–13, 1971: The #22 Porsche 917K of the Martini Racing Team, driven by Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep, makes history. After a turbulent opening phase (Rodríguez/Oliver in front, Ferrari briefly in the lead), the 917K takes control in the second half of the race – and sets a record: 5,335.313 km at an average speed of 222.304 km/h. The distance record stands for almost four decades (until 2010) and crowns the overall victory of this legendary car.
