Le Mans, June 22–23, 1991: Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot steer the Mazda 787B (#55) through a dramatic race—early Peugeot retirements, Jaguar having to conserve fuel, and Mercedes problems on Sunday—and make history: the first overall victory for a Japanese manufacturer and the only Le Mans victory for a rotary engine. After a long final stint, Herbert is so exhausted that he misses the podium ceremony. The trio covers a total distance of 4,922.81 km and averages 205.333 km/h.
