Often referred to as "the best racing car ever made", the 917 is widely revered as one of the most successful racing cars of all time and is certainly the most famous ever built by Porsche - which is saying a lot given the company's history. Unveiled at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show, it became a dominant force on the racetracks, particularly at Le Mans when the Circuit de la Sarthe was still the mecca that carmakers, racing teams and fans adored above all else - and it was the 917 that gave the Stuttgart-based company its first overall victory in the famous 24-hour race. The 917 was designed by chief engineer Hans Mezger, but it was Ferdinand Piëch who pushed for a "strong engine" and although he was pressed for time, Mezger did not disappoint. The car was fast. Faster than anything Porsche had ever tested on the racetrack. The 4.5 flat-12 engine - based on two 2.25 Porsche flat-6s - was a monster with lightning-fast acceleration and a top speed of well over 300 km/h (186 mph). Unfortunately, the chassis and aerodynamics were not up to scratch and the car was far from competitive, to say the least. Drivers reported that keeping the 917 on the tarmac was a similar task to trying to steer a wild boar around an ice rink. After a tough season of trial and error, they finally got it right. Converting the 917K to a short-tail body improved handling from blunt object to laser-guided missile, and at the 1970s 24 Hours of Le Mans, the red and white No. 23 Team Salzburg car, driven through the pouring rain by Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, finally took the first overall victory. Porsche repeated the Le Mans victory in 1971, setting a record for the overall distance that was not broken until 2010. In the years that followed, many variants of the 917 continued to race successfully, laying the foundations for a line of endurance racing cars that would dominate the sport for decades to come.
